Care and Cleaning
Nautolex® marine products.
This Nautolex marine product has been designed to provide years of dependable service with normal use and care. Regular care will help keep Nautolex marine products looking their best. However, some stains can become permanent if not removed quickly. We recommend cleaning as soon as possible after a stain is discovered.
Each week, wipe surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and towel dry. In very rainy weather, cover or remove cushions since seams can trap and absorb moisture. Cushions should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated place.
Special cleaning problems.
For dirt or stains that cannot be removed with a damp cloth (refer to cleaning chart below for examples) and to minimize any problems from these and other stains, it is recommended that as soon as they are noticed all stains should be cleaned, making sure the recommended cleaning steps are used in the following order:
Mild soap and water solution.
Use mild soap and water solution and if necessary, a soft-bristle brush. Rinse cleaned area with fresh water then dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
DO NOT USE abrasive powders, steel wool, industrial strength or solvent cleaners, vinyl “conditioners” or “protectants.” These products should be avoided on this Nautolex marine product. Undiluted bleach or lacquer solvents can dull or damage the marine product. If in doubt about a detergent or cleaner, test a patch in an inconspicuous place before applying in a larger area.
CAUTION: Suntan lotion and insect repellants can cause rapid staining and deterioration of the surface of the product. Remove these products immediately after contact. Wash the area with a mild soap and water solutions, rinse with clean, warm water, then towel dry.
These simple care and cleaning instructions will help keep this Nautolex Topping product mildew-free and looking good for years to come.
Each week, brush the fabric side of the topping with a soft bristle brush to remove any dirt and contamination build-up. After brushing, wash the fabric surface with a solutions made of 1-cup household bleach per gallon of clean water, and allow to air dry. Wash the vinyl side of your topping with a mild detergent solution, rinse with clean water and towel dry.
Special cleaning problems.
If mildew growth is a problem, spray the affected areas on the fabric side only with a cleaner such as X-14® Instant Mildew Stain Remover. Follow the manufacturers instructions provided on the container to ensure correct usage. Because X-14 is a caustic liquid, it can discolor some fabrics and cause deterioration of natural fabrics, such as cotton.
CAUTION: Never store a top that is wet, and do not store in a tightly sealed, humid container. Both of these conditions can cause rapid mildew growth.
Nautolex® marine products with PreFixx® protective finish.
This Nautolex marine product includes PreFixx protective finish, which is designed to be cleaned easily, over and over, without showing signs of wear. With PreFixx protection, it is possible to remove stains that never before could be removed. Now, with test-proven stain resistance, Naulotex products with PreFixx finishes protect you from high maintenance costs and from frequent reupholstery costs.
PreFixx finish goes beyond previous protection.
Performance. State-of-the-art resistance to staining, abrasion, scuffing, burnishing and blocking demonstrated in repeated laboratory tests.
Durability. Resists stain penetration of the upholstery for unique, long-term protection. The superior stain resistance and improved wear properties help keep PreFixx-protected Nautolex products looking new far longer than most other vinyl upholstery.
Easy Maintenance. Most common stains like dirt and smudges wipe off. Many difficult stains like ballpoint ink can be cleaned with active solvents such as nail polish remover without damaging the PreFixx finish, when following the recommended cleaning instructions.
Care and cleaning.
Day-to-day soil. Remove ordinary dirt and smudges with a mild soap and water solution and a clean soft cloth or towel; dry with a soft, lint-free cloth or towel. For more difficult stains continue to Special cleaning problems. The use of vinyl “conditioners” or “protectants” is not recommended and should be avoided on all Nautolex marine upholstery.
Special cleaning problems.
Although Nautolex marine products with PreFixx protection are resistant to most common stains, some fabric dyes have the ability to create a permanent stain. To minimize any problems from these and other stains, all stains should be cleaned as soon as they are noticed, making sure the recommended cleaning agents are used in the following order:
Step 1 – Non-abrasive cleaners.
Use one of the following recommended cleaners with a soft cloth or damp sponge: Formula 409® All-Purpose Spray Cleaner or Fantastik® Spray Cleaner Rinse cleaned area with fresh water then dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Step 2 – Solvent-type cleaner*.
Use rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol), rinse cleaned area with fresh water then dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Step 3 – Strong active solvent cleaners*.
Use a strong, active solvent cleaner diluted in water (70% water/30% solvent cleaner) such as nail polish remover (acetone/water) cleaners with a soft cloth or damp sponge. Stain should be removed with less than six (6) rubs: If the stain persists after six rubs, the stain has set and probably cannot be removed. Rinse cleaned area with fresh water, then dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
* CAUTION: Some solvents are highly flammable. Exercise proper care in cleaning and notify personnel in area of danger. Wear rubber gloves during all cleaning activities. Use caution in cleaning around buttons, stitching and wooden or decorative trim, since these solvents could seriously damage such areas.
Recommended cleaning steps for Nautolex™ marine products coated with PreFixx listed by stain type. Follow the cleaning steps in order for best results.
